Minutes
Joyce read the minutes from the April 26, 2004 meeting. Correction made to name of meeting place: Sierra View Library (not Reno Town Mall). Minutes approved with no other corrections.Reports
Treasurer: Cyndi reported that last month had more income than expenses, leaving NNHS with a $4,279 balance. Cheryl reported that Carol is voiding the check for the Resource Center because of a dispute over the other charges.Resource Center. Cheryl said the NNHS bank card charges had not been properly deducted from the NNHS account. She and Carol and Cyndi have been working to make sure the charges are assigned correctly to either the Resource Center or NNHS. The book and curriculum sale was held.
Care Committee: Lynn said there was nothing to report because it is a slow time of year.
Conference Committee report moved to new business.
Election Committee: Tracey is in the process of preparing a thorough report on how the vote-by-mail process went. Of the 309 ballots that were mailed out, 102 came back. This compares to only 12 ballots cast in 2003 when voting was held at the conference. Lynn said those results are the best NNHS has ever had.
There was a brief discussion about which candidates had been elected, but the board did not have an official list from Tracey.Unfinished business
conference Committee: Cheryl presented a detailed report on the conference, including speakers and costs. Rather than providing lunch, attendees will be advise that they need to bring their own lunches. The NNHS Rams will have a table with water and juices.Lynn moved that we offer scholarships to those families who cannot afford the registration fee for the conference. This was seconded by Joyce. It was agreed to cap the scholarship number at 20 and let people know about them through the registration packets. This passed unanimously.
Discussion followed about how to publicize the availability of scholarships and to encourage families to apply for them.
Joyce moved that the board give the Conference committee $135.05 for direct mailing to NNHS members about the conference. Cyndi seconded the motion. It passed unanimously.Resource Center transition: Cyndi reported that Carol destroyed the check that represented the remaining Resource Center fund.s She took this action because there remains a question about whether all the expenses for the enter had been deducted form the grant.
New Business
Newsletter advertising: Cheryl presented a question about whether NNHS should allow business owners to join the organization merely to benefit from the reduced advertising rates in the newsletter. Joyce said she thought that question had already been dealt with in the newsletter advertising policy: If the business provides a benefit specifically to homeschoolers (reduced rates, special homeschool classes), we do allow them to advertise.
Heather Mayorga raised a concern that perhaps the business owner might be looking for a way to access the membership directory, something which would not be allowed under our policies.
Carl Lucas asked if there were any background checks on advertisers and whether they could present a danger to students who enroll in their classes.
Cheryl voiced her concern that it was a matter of wanting to exploit, not support, homeschoolers.
Discussion followed about allowing the business owner to give a class at the conference, and give out fliers their.Lynn made a motion, seconded by Joyce, that we deny the membership but offer him a discount on advertising if he signs up for multiple months. The motion passed and Cheryl agreed to talk with him about the multiple-month discount.
