1. Call to order and approval of agenda

4. Reports

b. Treasurer Carol Williams
Carol Williams gave
her report see attached. Carol also
attached separately the conference budget and also added past conference costs.
c. Resource Center Carol Williams There is
no Resource Center.
d. Care Committee Bethany Callahan
See report enclosed. Jim asked who was on the Care
Committee. Bethany responded, Heather
and Bethany were the Care Committee.
Carl asked if the Care Packets legal handouts were up to date. Carl is
taking the original copies of the care packet home to check the packet for
accuracy.
e. School Board watch Carl Lucas Carl
checked 13 websites and noted: They are
not up to date. NRS 241 Open Meeting
Law - If the agency has an electronic website, it must post its agendas on the website
3 business days before public meetings and the agendas must be available via
the website. Jim P. is going to give
Carl list of board contacts.
f. Conference Committee Cheryl Cardoza
moved to new business.
Old Business
5. Web
Click-throughs Some companies will pay a commission for purchases
made by referrals from the website (e.g. Amazon, BookByte, Barnes & Noble,
Scholastic Books, OfficeMax, Travelocity, etc.). Should NNHS participate in these affiliate programs? If so, should the type of company be
restricted? Carol explained the
click-throughs. Bethany asked if it
would it jeopardize our tax exempt status.
Carol explained that as long as we dont support one place and it has a
variety of stuff to sell we will be okay.
a.Carol found a
fund-raising place called schoolpop.com.
When members buy from merchants through their website, NNHS will get a
rebate. The board members will research
schoolpop.com and take a vote on this at the next meeting.
New Business
6. Project
to raise awareness of library resources Julie Ullman is working
towards a Masters of Library Science degree.
Her masters project is to raise awareness among homeschoolers about the
resources of the public library.
Julie Ullman
introduced herself and explained her masters project. She would like to plan a
program to raise the awareness of the resources of the public library. Julie passed out a needs assessment
survey. Heather will take copies to the
Impact Co-op and Patti will take them to Eagle and WINN Co-ops. She will use the information for a research
project. Julie promised to share the
results with NNHS when it is complete.
7. Nevada
Day float Ann Tisue is asking for reimbursement of $25 for an NNHS
float entry for the Nevada Day parade in Carson City. Patti made a motion to approve and Heather seconded. Motion
carried.
8. NNHS
Science Fair and Invention Fair Kathy Heslop has again volunteered
to organize the NNHS Science and Invention Fair in mid-February. There is a $50 fee for entrance for our
group into the regional fair. Heather
made a motion to approve reimbursement to Kathy for the science fair and Patti
seconded. Motion carried.
9. NNHS
representative to Northern Nevada Home School Advisory Council The
Nevada Department of Education uses the NNHSAC to communicate with the
homeschool community. Irene Rushing
resigned her position as the NNHS representative. Carl Lucas has communicated with DOE officials about the
situation. Jim P. asked Carl to explain
how the advisory council works. Carl
explained that the council is set up by the Board of Education and is comprised
of homeschoolers in the north and the south.
This council informs the state board what they would like changed or
revised in the NAC. Jim P. asked the
board members to think of someone who could represent NNHS at the Department of
Education. Jim P. is going to ask David
to put something in the newsletter asking for a volunteer to the Northern
Nevada Home School Advisory Council.
10. Conference
debrief Cheryl presented a Final Conference Report (attached).
Conference cost was $4,964.26, with $4,682.00 in revenue, for a net loss of
$282.26. Cheryl is asking for approval
to proceed with the planning of the Conference for next year. Conference Committee consists of Cheryl
Cardoza as coordinator, Tom Cardoza, Heather Mayorga, Bethany Callahan, Gina
Hawley & Mickey Harris. Carl made a
motion to approve the conference to proceed and Patti seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Jim P. requested from Cheryl a conference
responsibilities list from the past conference.
11. Education
Collaborative David Pennington asked in an email, if the Board
would be interested in becoming members of the Education Collaborative of
Washoe County. Jim P. will look into
this and this is tabled for the next meeting.
