Kindergarten:
Describe or respond to a story orally, or by drawing/writing. There should be a beginning, middle and end.
First Grade:
Use prewriting activities to come up with topics. Write/dictate poetry. Write, proofread, edit and make a final copy. Write complete sentences.
Second Grade:
Write a friendly letter. Write a persuasive letter. Write a paragraph with a topic and supporting sentences. Write short stories with a beginning, middle, and ending.
Third Grade:
Use descriptive language. Use encyclopedias, dictionaries (etc.) to gather information for research. Learn the basics of how to cite sources. Respond to reading including evidence from what was read as support. Write short research reports.
Fourth Grade:
Organize writing. In what order should things be written and why? Master legible handwriting or word processing.
Fifth Grade:
Write stories including events, setting, problems, and solutions. Write and perform oral reports. Include the following techniques in personal poetry: alliteration, simile, onomatopoeia, and metaphor. Begin writing advertisements, plays, business letters, invitations, and announcements.
