What is a writing portfolio? A portfolio is simply a collection of writing. Why use a portfolio system?
Portfolios help assess growth of writers. They help in identifying strengths and weaknesses. Portfolios aid in identifying goals for the year and meeting those goals.
How do you make a portfolio?
Begin by coming up with a list of forms you'd like your portfolio to include. Throughout the year students will file all of their assignments together. At various times in the year (quarterly?) students will go over all of their pieces and decide which ones they would like to include in the portfolio. At the end of the year, students can review their portfolio to decide what stays and what goes. The portfolio can be collated in a scrapbook style, or copied and sent to family & friends. Portfolios can be compared to assess how a student has grown and what goals should be set for the next school year.
How do you decide what should go into the portfolio?
Look at a writing scope and sequence for your child's age group. Review your child's writing from the previous year. Try to identify strengths and weaknesses. Figure out what was covered adequately and what needs more work. If you feel your child is not enjoying writing as much as you wish they were, build your portfolio contents around high interest subjects/forms. Allow your child to work with you on the portfolio content list. They will feel more ownership over the entire process.
