Civil War Days Virginia City; Sept 2 - 5

Announcements - Last Update Sat, 08/13/2011 - 12:11pm

The historic mining camp of Virginia City, Nevada celebrates the Civil War every Labor Day weekend. The sesquicentennial of the beginning of the Civil War has prompted a fuller offering of Civil War-related events September 2 through 5, 2011. Visitors may view re-enactors at field camps, parades, battle demonstrations, train hold-ups, a Victorian high tea, Victorian dance, and this year, the staged reading of the epic Stephen Vincent Benet poem, John Brown’s Body with professional cast. The weekend provides fine family fare that educates as well as entertains.

Civil War School Days is on Friday September 2nd with the Comstock Civil War Reenactors at Miners Park in Virginia City, 9:00 a.m.
2$/child, 1$/adult

Friday, September 2nd is FREE ADMISSION DAY at the Virginia City Museums

Flashback Friday Museum Days - FREE, suggested donation $1/person at the visitor center :-)

This is your chance to experience all of the Comstock history in Virginia City! All Virginia City museums have waived admission* on the first Friday of the month from May through October.

We will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Historic Crystal Bar, now the Virginia City Visitors Center, to receive a map. The map has a recommended route and details about Virginia City. As I understand it, free admission applies only to those with the pass from the Visitor's Center and map.

***Let's start with these participating locations this time:

Historic Fourth Ward School and Archives

Storey County Courthouse***

Bring a packed lunch, or money for hot dogs, ice cream and fudge! We can meander around town, see some museums, talk about Nevada history, and visit with our friends.

Dress for the summer weather, with comfortable walking shoes - the boardwalk is uneven, and town is spread out once you find a parking place.

Consider a brimmed hat and sunglasses, sunscreen, stroller and a backpack containing bottled water and snacks.

*The event is complimentary but we encourage particpants to donate when they pick up the map. All donations are split amongst the participating locations. So, bring a buck per person in your party, just to be nice.
